How to change your Tinder location on iPhone

To change your Tinder location on an iPhone, change the location iOS reports, then close and reopen Tinder so it takes a fresh reading. Tinder’s own way to do the same thing is Passport, which comes with its paid plans and moves you inside Tinder only. Either way, Tinder reads a location, and what gets accounts noticed is behaviour, not coordinates.

What Tinder reads

Tinder takes your location from the iPhone the same way every other app does: it asks iOS, and iOS answers. That position sets your discovery area, your distance labels and which profiles you see. Change what iOS reports and Tinder shows you the new city.

Your IP address is a second, rougher signal any app can see without asking. Tinder does not publish what it does with it, so we will not pretend to know. People on holiday with a home phone plan produce a GPS in one country and an IP in another every day.

Passport or your phone’s location

If Tinder is the only app you care about, Passport is the tool Tinder built for exactly this, and using it cannot put the account at risk. Changing the phone’s location makes sense when it is not only Tinder you want to move.

Setting it up

1. Install PinDrift on your PC or Mac. Pair your iPhone over a USB cable once and switch on Developer Mode when it asks. After that you can work wirelessly, or use the PinDrift iPhone app, which the desktop installs with your own Apple ID and which works with no computer at all.
2. Drop a pin in the city you want to match in. Somewhere a person would actually live, not the middle of a landmark, then apply it.
3. Open Tinder. If the feed has not caught up, force-quit the app and open it again.

If Tinder still shows your old city

Tinder mostly reads your location when you open it, so the old city usually stays until it takes a fresh reading. Close it from the app switcher and open it again. Then check Settings, Privacy & Security, Location Services, Tinder: it needs While Using the App or Always, with Precise Location on. If Passport is switched on, it takes priority over the phone’s location until you turn it off.

What your matches see

A distance, not a point. Tinder shows other people roughly how far away you are, worked out from your last stored location, not a pin on a map. That is why changing your location changes the distance on your profile and nothing else about it.

Where people actually get into trouble

Rarely the coordinate. Usually the pattern: a profile in Atlanta, then Berlin, then Tokyo inside an hour, a brand-new account swiping in a city it has no connection to, or swiping and messaging faster than a person could. Tinder does not publish what it checks, so nobody can promise any of this is safe, us included. One city, held for a while and used the way a person uses the app, is the least unusual thing you can do.

Changing your location may also go against Tinder’s terms. That is a contract question rather than a legal one, and the realistic consequence is the account: is location spoofing legal covers it. And if your location is somewhere you do not live, say so in your profile. Misleading matches is how accounts get reported.
